Vineyards

We believe that 95% of a wine is made in the vineyard. Winemaking, for us, is about giving the fruit a voice, intervening as little as possible and knowing when to leave things alone. We work with a bunch of rather brave growers (yes, growing something other than commercially proven Sauvignon Blanc takes a certain amount of courage) who know their land intimately and share our appreciation for quality, curiosity and Marlborough's potential. Rather than owning vineyards, we build relationships with the people who tend them, seeking out distinctive sites and fruit that tells a story of its origins.

Let's be honest: there aren't many Marlborough vineyards growing alternative varieties. We're lucky to source Albariño from two quite different sites: the Awatere Valley, where maritime influences contribute to its bright acidity and salinity, and the Wairau Valley township, where a longer ripening season encourages aromatic development and complexity.

Our Grüner Veltliner comes from the cooler microclimate of the Southern Valleys, where clay-rich soils and a long, cool growing season help preserve freshness and develop expressive aromatics.

We also got extremely lucky with Chenin Blanc, finding fruit from an old-vine vineyard in Central Wairau. In a region where Sauvignon Blanc dominates, discovering mature Chenin vines feels like finding a little piece of hidden treasure. It's an opportunity to work with a variety that has so much history and character, and we're excited to see what this special site can express.

Our Viognier journey has taken us across Marlborough, trialling different plots from Coastal Awatere to Lower Wairau and the Southern Valleys. Exploring these different sites has helped us understand how much location can shape the expression of this variety. Today, we source our Viognier from the Southern Valleys, including a biodynamic vineyard. Its approach goes beyond conventional farming, considering the vineyard as a living ecosystem and taking cues from the wider rhythms of nature and even the cosmos. We find something inspiring in this deeper connection between the vines, the land and the world around them.

We believe great wines are never the work of one person alone. Our part is to recognise the potential of each site, work with it thoughtfully and let its voice find its way into the glass.
